Answer is given 1 but carbene has no lone pairs right? It has two unpaired electrons afaik.

Ok found it. Singlet has lp, while triplet doesn’t have. Which one is formed, how do we know? @Cooljet123

:CCl2 and lone pair in one orbital, not in two separate orbitals.

@LaveshGupta If you don’t mind, can you share some of the exceptions of o/p and m directing groups? Like activating groups are o/p and deactivating are m directing generally.
Some groups which deviate from this.

@LaveshGupta all ionic mechanisms always produce singlet carbene.

Triplet carbene can be produced from singlet carbene if exposed to light.

Similar ques was discussed few weeks back, tho I don’t remember exactly the solution.

Ye hone se lone pair alag plane me chala jata hai. Jis plane me benzene ke π orbitals hai uske perpendicular plane pe ek orbital me lone pair lie karega ( sulfur chor ke kyo ki uska double rehne ke baad bhi uska hybridisation state sp3 hi rehta hai so lone pair us plane me a sakta hai… baki walo me sp2 ban jata hai aur lone pair on plane of paper pe rehta hai whereas π orbitals outside plane of paper)…

Isi karan hi benzyne me bhi hamlog inductive effect hi dekhte hai and not mesomeric effects
